  • Continue monthly Monroe/Summers Counties Tobacco Prevention Coalition Meetings.
  • Educate the public on breast cancer health issues
  • Educate the public on CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program)
  • Publish at least two Wellness Topics Newsletters a year

The Monroe/Summers Counties Tobacco Prevention Coalition provides oversight of a grant that enables this Coalition to publish at least two issues of Wellness Topics Newsletter that is inserted into the Monroe Watchman and Hinton News reaching a minimum of 5,000 households in both counties.  We are dedicated to educating the public about the health risks of tobacco use. click Tobacco Prevention Grant Application 2007-2008.  

The Breast Cancer Awareness Committee plans and coordinates a yearly Cancer Walk in Monroe County in October.  Money raised from the walk provides screenings for women that have no insurance or are underinsured.  This team meets quarterly with the COPC and TLC Wellness teams to share information and coordinate activities together.

Background:  The Monroe/Summers Counties Tobacco Prevention Coalition has been meeting monthly alternating meetings at the Monroe County Family Resource Network and The Wellness Center in Hinton.  This Coalition has been publishing a Wellness Topics Newsletter since 1999 with 90% of the newsletter providing education about the health risks of tobacco use.  Past issues have included articles about: 

The summer 2006 issue included a story from a local man that smoked for many years and lost a lung to lung cancer and included a picture of his surgery scar.  The Fall 2006 issue articles included: Quit Smoking for Baby and You, Spit Tobacco Billboard displayed in Hinton, Surgeon General  lists Second Hand Smoke Hazards, Spit Tobacco A Deadly WV Tradition, It's Never to late to Quit Smoking and Light cigarettes suffer legal blow in Federal Court.  The Winter issue included articles on Smoking and Pregnancy, Increased Health Risks, Facts about Nicotine Replacement Therapy, You do the math-What could I have if I quit buying those nasty, addictive cigarettes?, Tobacco Smoke Poisons, The Killers in that pack of cigarettes.  The Spring 2007 issue included articles on Tobacco Prevention Strategies Training, SNUS, Monroe Breast Cancer Walk and Dinner, Need Help Quiting? Call today!, Obesity-a state and national problem, HMM..What could I have if I quit buying those nasty addictive cigarettes?, Summers County Prevention Partnership. The YNOTQUIT line is listed along with the American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and Tobacco Free Kids in every issue. 

The Breast Cancer Awareness Committee has been a proactive team since 1998.  They meet monthly and educate the public about the importance of breast self-exam, mamograms and catching breast cancer early.  Information is provided by members at Health Fairs, Farmer's Day, Autumn Harvest Festival and one to one.  A yearly cancer walk is held in October with the proceeds going to pay for screenings for women with no insurance or underinsured. Sixty-three women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Monroe County 2001-2004.
